Boatbuilding, New Construction

Westsail Corporation: Richard worked for two years, constructing 32 ft. fiberglass sailboats. He worked on several crews, including; fiberglass bonding, engine installations and steering systems and exterior teak trim.

Sunward Yachts: Richard worked for a year helping to construct these 48 ft fiberglass sailboats. He did several areas on both of two boats while he was there including; the engine and shaft installations, the complete engine beds and bulkheads from the hulls up, all engine room plumbing including the AC compressors and refrigeration/freezer cabinetry and cold plate units and associated refrigerant tubing, and the complete rudder and steering installation. In addition to the refrigeration/freezer units cabinetry, he built other wooden cabinetry elsewhere in the galley and master staterooms and built and installed the exterior teak rub rails.

And other examples in later years.

21 ft Indian Mold.     This fiberglass mold was taken from Richard's first wooden sailboat, A Massachusetts Bay Indian, designed by John Alden. There were several new fiberglass boats built here in Wilmington but these had several differences from the wooden boats. They were built with no flooring, a longer mast and a shorter boom so as to have a permanent backstay rather than running backstays.

30 ft trimaran sailboats.     Richard statrted his own company to build three of these 30 ft sailing trimarans for a customer. Developing an expert crew to help, Richard completed the entire project from full size lofting with the Naval Architect to completion, painting and sailing tryouts.

The 38 ft. sailboat following is a modified Herreshoff "Neria" sailboat. Richard did the full size lofting for this setup personally and helped toward completion of this first complete boat departing for the Annapolis Boat Show.
The 42' powerboat following is a Fexas designed "Midnight Lace" derivitive designed for the designer's personal use. Although a hull mold and a deck mold were built, this was the only boat to this design that was ever built and is not yet finished. This professionally built airex core boat is presently for sale at a bargain price.
